ANS:
Apostrophes are used to show possession or form contractions. There are basic rules and then there are style exceptions. You would use Chicago-style business’s (singular possessive) to show that the particular business (singular noun) in question owns or is a member of something, for example, the business’s earnings doubled that of its rival. You would use businesses (plural noun) when referring to multiple businesses, for example, All three businesses showed an increase in earnings. This gets confusing when the style is a factor, some prefer an apostrophe after (business’ and businesses’) when the word ends with s (AP style science and journalism)
