In the first cricket test that finished very late on the fifth day
on Wednesday, New Zealand defeated Pakistan by 101
runs, achieving their third consecutive victory in three home tests
this summer and taking a 1-0 lead in the two-test series.
When they came to the fifth day of a Test match for the first time
this season having a major lead, the win was not the emphatic one New
Zealand possibly had expected.
Pakistan was 71-3 and 301 runs behind after 373 was expected to win, and New Zealand
bowlers who had dismissed
Pakistan for 239 in their first innings to provide a
192-run lead to the home side still held the upper hand.
Around the same time, for the first time in its history, New Zealand overtook Australia to hold the No. 1 world ranking in research.
