Numbers are important, which is why we put so many of them into our tests for new transcribers. Most of the numbers in this test are also in the guidelines, which we recommend all transcribers and transcriber wannabes bookmark and refer to as often as possible. Even if the exact number you’re concerned about isn’t there, one similar to it will doubtless catch your eye.

For example, the guidelines tell you to spell out single-digit numbers and use numerals for all other numbers. This means if I rattle off a series of random numbers, such as 08 11, etc, you’ll be able to format them correctly because you’ll actually be looking at a similar string of numbers on the screen.

However, as with pretty much every rule, ever invented by the mind of man or woman, there are many, many exceptions or loopholes. Let’s say I tell you that eight out of 15 people born in the 80s, won’t read through that list of exceptions and format this particular sentence correctly.

Let’s say also that I tell you this was predicted in the Bible, in Proverbs, Chapter 13, verse four, then let’s say I quote from an obscure book about the great Einstein’s theory of relativity to wit, imagine the source and the observer 1100 feet apart and advancing on the same train. When the gun is fired, the velocity of the sound waves will be greater with regard to the observer, and he will hear the sound in less than a second.

When the bell is struck, it will have the normal pitch. How many of you will both format all the numbers correctly, and apply quotation marks in the correct places? It’s a mystery. All I can add at this point is that, contrary to what some of our Facebook members claim, we do need and hire transcribers regularly. We just want them to be good ones.

We also don’t want them to be bots. So if you’re a real person listening to this, please put the words of that Bible quote I referenced above at the end of your transcript and state which translation you got it from. Now, you won’t necessarily be approved. If you do this. You may have made other errors that preclude that, but you will definitely be declined if you don’t. So let’s see it.
