These are the 20 most traded stocks in 2021

Every investment carries risks. Nevertheless, more and more people are currently attracted to the stock market. Neo broker Scalable Capital has therefore analyzed the trading volume in 2021 and identified the most popular and most traded stocks.

If you only leave your money in a current or call money account, you are theoretically giving away a lot of potential. Because of the ongoing zero interest rate policy of many banks, the savings bring so little income. Many customers even pay on it due to the negative interest rates at some financial institutions.

That’s why more and more people in Germany are investing in stocks, ETFs and funds. According to Deutsches Aktieninstitut (DAI), several million new securities accounts were opened in 2020 – and the trend is rising.

But in which companies do (German) investors invest? To answer this question, Neo Broker Scalable Capital has analyzed the trading volume in 2021 and identified the most traded stocks.

The trading volume includes both purchases and sales. The data therefore provide only limited conclusions about the actual popularity of the shares.

Biontech, Curevac and Moderna: Pharma stocks on the rise

In particular, the shares of pharmaceutical companies were on the upswing in the pandemic year 2021. Vaccine manufacturer Biontech, for example, recorded a relatively high trading volume throughout the year and accordingly ranks first in the ranking.

The company reached a peak on 26 November 2021, when the EU Commission also approved the Biontech vaccine for children aged five to eleven years. The trading volume of Moderna shares, on the other hand, was relatively unspectacular throughout the year.

However, vaccine manufacturer Curevax suffered a severe setback. The year 2021 has started relatively promisingly for the company. Already in February, the increase was around 50 percent and the Curevac share at around 100 euros.

On June 17, 2021, however, disillusionment followed: study results showed that the Curevac vaccine was far less effective than hoped. In October, the company then gave up its efforts to produce a corona vaccine altogether. Nevertheless, it is enough for 13th place in the ranking of Scalable Capital.

The most traded stocks in 2021: Tesla, Gamestop and AMC Entertainment

Particularly interesting are the shares of Gamestop and AMC Entertainment, which received a real push from the users of the Reddit forum “r/wallstreetbets”. Both stocks achieved a high trading volume, especially at the beginning of the year.

Also worth mentioning is the Tesla share, which reached a new record level in November and jumped to over 1,000 euros for the first time. With an estimated value of over a trillion US dollars, CEO Elon Musk’s company ranks second in the ranking.

With Volkswagen, Deutsche Post, SAP, BASF, Varta, Deutsche Lufthansa, Allianz, Daimler, TUI and Bayer, a conspicuous number of German companies are also represented. This could be due not least to the so-called home bias, i.e. the tendency to invest preferably in the domestic market.
